Scholten Construction - Decks, Concrete, Painting, Siding, and Roofing

Scholten Construction did a phenomenal job replacing our front step and back deck and pouring a concrete patio for us. They had excellent communication throughout both projects, worked efficiently, and did top notch work. We would recommend them to anyone looking for decking or concrete work. We will be return customers!

We had our house resided, painted, gutters installed, and two decks replaced. The residing crew did an amazing job. They were fast, courteous, and extremely hard working. I would hire them again without hesitation. The deck crew built two absolutely beautiful decks. They went above and beyond. I have to make special mention of Jordan of the painting crew. We will be using him for all future painting projects. I could not possibly recommend him highly enough.

I have a walk-out ranch making the deck high and it is under an overhanging roof, originally built in 1999. I put the replacement project out to bid with 6 bidders responding. Drew came over and he made suggestions for best practices and it was clear he knew what he was doing. Even though Scholten wasn't the low bid, we went with them to replace our deck because of their knowledge and approach. For clarity, they were substantially less than most of the bids we received. Their construction team was fantastic, cleaning up every night, happy to answer any questions and put in some long hot hours with a smile ...at least when I was there. Very happy with the outcome based on their suggestions. The details like the framing show they care about the outcome. Drew came out for the final face to face inspection which says a lot about their service as well. Highly recommended! I attached a few pics of the before and after.

**Bad Experience — Read Before You Sign** I waited 2 years to post this hoping they'd make it right. They haven't. I should have posted sooner. I hired Scholten Construction to pour a new concrete driveway. The work was defective, and when I raised concerns they gave me assurances they never intended to keep, stonewalled, and waited for me to go away. **Workmanship failures:** - Largest pour done the night of a freeze without proper covering - Rebar left flat on the ground — not elevated per industry standards (I have video) - Base not properly compacted - Relief cuts not done correctly **What that produced:** - 3 slabs with full-length, full-depth cracks and others with cracked sections — all within the first year; large curb and gutter crack within four months (approximately 45 feet of cracks) - Dozens of surface holes within 24 hours, patched with grout that is now cracking and popping out - Widespread pitting across the first pour — salt has never been used on this surface They promised to replace the curb and cracked section near the garage. Neither was ever done. Every defect — the cracks, the holes, the pitting — were dismissed with excuses. These were avoidable. **Also worth knowing:** their contract forces you into arbitration. There is currently only one arbitrator in South Dakota, which makes meaningful resolution extremely difficult in practice. How a contractor handles mistakes is what really counts. Based on my experience: they don't. To clarify for anyone reading: this offer has existed for 2 years and nothing has ever been scheduled or completed. I should not have to chase a contractor to fix their own defective work. And I have approximately 45 feet of cracks through out the driveway and gutter. As for leaves — the issue is dozens of surface holes that appeared within 24 hours

I had a great experience with Drew from start to finish. They completed the job quickly without cutting corners, and the final result looks fantastic. I’d definitely recommend them to anyone looking for a quality deck.
